My posting has been VERY sporadic in recent months--even years--but here's something that's been rolling around in my head for a very long time;
What if, upon arriving at your usual church one Sunday morning you discovered that all was gone except for one willing and able-minded preacher equipped only with a Bible? How many people would stay to hear the Word of God taught and applied? Of those people, how many would purposefully and eagerly join in worshipping God? And, how many would return the next Sunday knowing this is how it would be again?
What, if anything, might we have come to expect--or even demand--from our churches that is not supported in Scripture?

We have a communion service for 60 minutes on Sunday morning, with no prearranged leader, no set music and no liturgy. Brothers who are (hopefully) led by the Spirit stand, ask for a hymn, pray or make worshipful comment on some portion of Scripture, with a focus on the person and work of Christ.
Then we have our Bible Hour, where we sing some more hymns (sometimes we have piano accompaniment) and a gifted brother teaches from the Bible for about 45 minutes.
That said, there are a lot of churches in town that have much more flashy programs, bands, worship leaders, A/V, and some of them are growing considerably. We seem to be barely holding our own. I wouldn't want to change anything about what we do, but I do sometimes wonder why Spirit led Christians are not more attracted to New Testament simplicity.
