Heritage ~ Celebrating My Cherokee Ancestory

November 17, 2007 marks the 100th anniversary of Oklahoma's statehood!

My Cherokee ancestors were here in Indian Territory long before statehood was even a consideration--products of the early 1800's Indian removals.

The family picture above was taken in Indian Territory (eastern Oklahoma) several years prior to statehood. That's my great grandfather and great grandmother, along with four of their five children--all registered on the Dawes Roll through his side of the family. My grandmother was child number five (born a number of years after this photo), her mother (my great grandmother) died just weeks after giving birth.
